Siamese Dream

Smashing Pumpkins

A pretty solid album, but as with most SP albums, there are one two many snoozers on here that kind of kill the momentum to a degree.  That said, hard to go wrong with "Cherub Rock" "Quiet" "Today" "Mayoinaise" etc.  Siamese Dream is like a less ambitious, stripped-down version of Melloncholly, so overall it's pretty good, but not quite great.

Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness

This is the Smashing Pumpkins' best album.  It's basically a more ambitous, sprawling version of Siamese Dream.  While there are once again a few too many snoozers to be found here, the heavier tracks have more bite to them, and are generally more satisfying to listen to.  Some of the heavier tracks are downright vicious...nothing like a classic down-tuned SP metallic groove...that's when they were arguably at their best.  That said, songs like "Tonight Tonight" and "1979" are not heavy, but are probably the best songs on the entire album.  And of course, on the flipside, "Bullet With Butterfly Wings" is fantasticly kick-ass.  Easily one of the best alt-metal songs of the decade.  If it were not for a few throwaways, and a few more pedestrian numbers, I would consider this to be a great album.  Basically if they had trimmed the fat down to the size of Siamese Dream.  As it is, it's just a very good (albeit slightly bloated) album.  A 90s classic nonetheless.
