Plastic Ono Band

John Lennon

1970

I love John Lennon as much as the next guy, but I have a hard time reaping excessive praise on his solo efforts.  This one sounds way too melodramatic and self-loathing…everyone's a victim, whah whah...it's too self-indulgent, but that was Lennon I guess.  Having said that, I do really enjoy "Working Class Hero", "I Found Out", "Well Well Well" and maybe a couple of other songs, but as a whole, it's hard for me to see this is a great album, especially considering what he did with The Beatles.  There's simply not enough good songs.  I understand it was influential, and it's a classic album, but I can't say I'm in love with it...it's really just pretty above average in my book.

Imagine

John Lennon

1971

One of the greatest songs of all-time + 2 other really good songs ("Crippled Inside" & "Jealous Guy") unfortunately don't quite make up for the blandness of the other songs on this album.  After you get past the 1st 3 songs, the quality drops off fairly dramatically from there, so overall, if you look at the album as a whole, it's really just another average Lennon solo record all things considered.
