Strap It On

Helmet

1990

This album set the tone for all the heavy music that was to come in the decade.  Drop-D tuning, staccato riffs, the groove, the grind, it's all here in perhaps it's purest form.

The 1st half of the album is rock solid, while the 2nd half of the album drops off in quality to a degree.  Overall though, this is a very important album for alternative-metal, and captures Helmet at their most raw, heavy, and in your face.  Good shit.

Meantime

Helmet

1992

This is the OG 90s alternative-metal album.  It's not particularly heavy, but it's got that downtuned grind/groove that was hugely influential to a lot of bands to come later in the decade (including my boys in Korn).  This album isn't going to blow you away, but it's just steadily good throughout, as Helmet hammers away with their mid-tempo rhythmic grind from one song to the next.  An important and hugely influential album...Helmet's best.

8.3

Betty

Helmet

1994

The first 4-5 songs on the album are just as good as Meantime (if not better at times), but unfortunately the remaining 8+ songs…aren't.  They're either too boring, too bland, and generally just too underwhelming.  Granted, that's kind of the nature of Helmet's sound, but there's way too much of them going through the motions on Betty, which makes it a chore to listen to in it's entirety unfortunately.
